When altering commonplace elements in everyday life, the bleak, almost mechanical, aspects become fantastical. When a piece of typical upholstery - let's take, for instance, a doormat - assumes the persona of a man that is stepped on, one realizes that the concept of a stationary object has the potential to change and even challenge societal norms. MAT-MAN realizes the untapped possibilities in which we can find inspiration in our everyday lives.
MAT-MAN is a performance piece. MAT-MAN pretended to be a stationary mat, then moved every 20 minutes around the gallery space, re-assuming his position to be a mat. A take-home comic zine accompanied this piece about MAT-MAN's motive to transform into a mat - to offer warmth to a homeless man with no shoes.
